 今日はみんなで英語の勉強をしてみましょう。

"The Coral is Crying!" What does this mean?" I was interested in the TV program and watched it seriously.
There is a stock of famous blue coral in Shiraho. The beautiful, splendid ocean is recognized all over the world. The sea of Shiraho was appointed as an under-water park. Through out the year, a lot of tourists come to see the coral reef. I went snorkeling there when I was in elementary school. "Wow! How wonderful! What a beautiful sea!" I thought. The colorful fish swam around the corals. And sea anemones! I had never imagined such a beautiful world. I swam and swam like a fish. I can remember the feeling and the clear sea vividly even now.
However, I've heard the bad news that the ocean is polluted and the amount of coral reef and fish are decreasing year by year. I was very shocked to hear the news. "Why is the ocean becoming so dirty?" "Why are the coral and fish decreasing?" I wondered.
They said one of the factors is 'Global Warming'. WWF research says the sea temperature has risen about one degree compared with that of ten years ago. Only ONE degree? The situation is not so simple. If the water temperature rises by one degree, the sea creatures are seriously harmed. In fact, corals die of hakka-gensho, white syndrome. White syndrome occurs when the sea temperature rises by more than thirty degrees. And even worse to say, man has also damaged the corals. When we people do agrarian reforms, the red soil runs down to the sea. Corals cannot live in the polluted water.
By the way, we have "WWF Coral Reef Conservation and Research Centre" in Shiraho, and the people who live in the village sometimes do volunteer work to save the earth. Since I watched the TV program the other day, I've wanted to do anything I can to help. So, I took part in one of the environmental programs.
I joined "The Getto Plantation Program". Getto is good for protecting against the flow of the red soil. It is a popular plant that we can see everywhere in Okinawa. I asked, "Mother, why is getto so good for protection against the flow of the red soil?" Mother told me. "Their roots are very strong and they can hold the soil. You can plant them closely together. Plant trees and you can also protect the sea." Many Shiraho people participated in the project. We worked hard. It was a very hot day, planting 600 getto seedlings was not easy. Although I got tired, it was a great experience. One man's tiny action became a big power and the big action will save the sea and the earth.
We people are punished by the nature we destroyed. Now, it is the time that every single human has to return the beautiful earth to what it once was. Children like me can also do something for the earth. For example, "Turn off the lights when we're not using them", "Use the air conditioner at 28 degrees" and so on.
I love the nature of Ishigaki Island. I hope the beautiful nature remains forever. Now, everyone, why don't you think about the problem together, and do something together? May the corals not cry again!
